Within IT support one thing has remained
constant over the years - the need to backup.
Most of us use some sort of removable media to
backup to, something we can take off-site so not to
be affected by fire or theft. However, why do we
only backup once a day? Why is it acceptable to
loose a whole days worth of data when that days work
has cost thousands of pounds to produce? We started
asking these questions a few years ago and came up
with a triple backup system. Each complement each
other but cost no more to administer than a single
instance method. First we continue the daily tape
backup that most of us use, after all it's a classic
and inexpensive method. However, we also assign a
daily "drive image" to either a secondary hard disk
or NAS device. This enables many or few backup
"snapshots" throughout the day. We set it for 10,
one for each hour of work. The third instance is a
daily off-site backup. Just as we backup to tape we
also backup to a remote server (that is also
mirrored). This then covers the possibly of human or
software error, even a faulty tape.
We also offer all our clients a disaster
recovery option. By keeping supplies of
the most commonly used equipment in-house. If
a clients equipment is damaged or stolen, short-term
temporary equipment can be installed at a client's
site. In time, procurement of replacement equipment
can be arranged by the client or by us on behalf of
the client in a timely manner once exact
requirements have been established, reducing the
risk of unnecessary investment. Most importantly it
keeps the client up and running, reducing any
possible financial loss.
